Utrecht, a city in the Netherlands, has installed green roofs on 316 of its bus stops to help improve air quality and contribute to the city’s biodiversity. The bus stops now double as bee stops, providing additional places for bees to pollinate. The roofs also capture dust, store rain water and provide cooling in the summer time. As part of the green initiative, the bus stops are also outfitted with efficient LED lights and a bamboo bench. The city has also recently replaced 10 diesel buses with electric buses and aims to operate only CO2 neutral buses by 2028 🚌🌿🐝 (📷:   @brightvibesmedia  ,   @uitdragerij  , 📝:   @kassy  ) -   #busstop     #busstops     #bus     #buses     #publictransportation     #transportation     #bee     #bees     #savethebees     #pollination     #bumblebees     #insect     #insects     #greenarchitecture     #plant     #plants     #nature     #ecofriendly     #biodiversity     #environment     #environmentalism     #pollution     #savetheearth     #saveourplanet     #sustainability     #utrecht     #netherlands     #dutch     #nederland     #nederlands

Nine deer at Nara Park in western Japan have died after eating plastic bags and food wrappers. The Nara Deer Preservation Foundation said that nine out of the 14 deer that have died since March had plastic in their stomachs, with one reportedly having more than 9 lbs (4 kg) of rubbish in its stomach. A spokesperson for the preservation foundation told Japan’s Kyodo News Agency that tourists often discard food wrappers and plastic bags on the island, which the deer then mistakenly consume as food. The spokesperson said that the deer were very skinny and may have died as a result of malnutrition from the indigestible plastic filling up the space in their stomachs. There are more than 1,000 deer at Nara, which is a popular tourist destination. Park visitors can feed the deer special sugar-free snacks without any plastic packaging sold at nearby shops. On Wednesday, volunteers took part in a mass clean up of the park and collected more than 68lbs (31 kg) of plastic waste. Ahead of a climbing ban that will be instituted on Oct. 26, tourists are flocking to climb Uluru, also known as Ayer’s Rock, the iconic sandstone monolith in the heart of Australia’s Northern Territory’s “Red Centre.” A spokesperson from Tourism Central Australia told the New York Times that more than 370,000 people visited the rock in 2018, which is a 20 percent increase from 2017, adding that that the sudden influx of tourists is putting strain on the site, leading to reports of increased illegal camping, trespassing and trash dumping. Photos shared on social media showed crowds of tourists climbing the 1,141 foot (348 meter) rock. The rock is sacred to indigenous Anangu Australians and sits inside a national park that is a Unesco World Heritage site. Signs at the base of the site have read “This is our home” and “Please do not climb” for years. Following their plea, the board members of the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park announced a ban in November 2017, which is also intended to help prevent environmental mental damage to the rock. On   @world   today: East West Market, a grocery store in Vancouver, Canada, designed and printed embarrassing slogans on its plastic bags in an attempt to discourage customers from using single-use plastic bags for their shopping. The shop’s owner, David Lee Kwen, told the Guardian that he came up with the idea after he found that the shop’s 5-cent charge for plastic bags wasn’t deterring people from using them. “We wanted to give them something humorous, but also something that made them think at the same time,” he said. The bags, however, turned out to be such a hit that Kwen is now looking to transfer the images on to canvas bags. “Some of the customers want to collect them because they love the idea of it,” he said, adding that he still believes the plan is working as they have managed to start a conversation 🇨🇦♻️😂 (📷: East West Market / Facebook, 📝:   @kassy  ) -   #plasticbag     #plasticbags     #plastic     #normoreplastic     #saynotoplastic     #savetheplanet     #saveouroceans     #environmentalism     #environmentalist     #singleuseplastic     #plasticpollution     #endplasticpollution     #savetheearth     #saveourplanet     #sustainability     #recycling     #recycle     #totebags     #canvasbags     #groceries     #grocerybags     #bag     #bags     #design     #environment     #vancouver     #canada     #canadian

Pakistan’s top judge has announced that the country is setting up more than 1,000 courts dedicated to violence against women. “The atmosphere of these courts will be different from other courts so that complainants can speak their heart without their fear,” the country’s chief justice said in his announcement. Domestic violence is often seen as a taboo topic in the conservative Muslim country, which sees thousands of cases of violence against women every year, from sexual assaults, kidnappings and “honor killings,” according to the Guardian. There were at least 845 incidents of sexual violence against women in the country in 2018, according to the Human Rights of Pakistan, which said that violence against women often goes unreported especially in rural areas, where poverty and stigma prevents victims from speaking out. The new courts will operate within existing courthouses, but the domestic violence hearings will be held separately from other cases to allow victims to speak out without fear of retaliation. A freak hailstorm on Sunday left the city of Guadalajara in Jalisco state, Mexico, covered in ice up to 5 ft (1.5 meters) thick. The heavy hailstorm lasted 20 minutes, between 1:50 and 2:10 am local time, when the air temperature suddenly dropped from 72F (22C) to 57F (14C). Authorities said that about 200 homes were damaged and dozens of vehicles were swept away due to flooding and fallen trees, but there were no reports of injuries, according to the BBC. “I witnessed scenes I had never seen before: hail more than a meter high, and we wonder if climate change is real,” Jalisco’s state governor, Enrique Alfaro, tweeted. Tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets across Sudan’s major cities on Sunday to continue to call for civilian rule, in the biggest mass protest since a military crackdown on June 3 killed at least 128 people. Sunday’s protests left seven people dead and nearly 200 injured, the New York Times reported. Security forces fired tear gas at protesters in the capital, Khartoum, Omdurman, and the eastern town of Gadaref, according to the BBC. The protests coincided with the 30th anniversary of a coup that brought Omar Al-Bashir, the country’s dictator of 30 years, to power. Bashir was forced from power and arrested by the military in April, following months of mass protests. Protesters are demanding that the transitional military council hands over power to a civilian government. Donald Trump has become the first sitting US president to step into North Korea after he met with North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong Un, on Sunday following the G20 summit in Japan. Trump and Kim shook hands over the concrete border marker in the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone before Kim invited Trump to cross the border. After about a minute in North Korea, the two walked back over the line into South Korea, where they were joined by South Korean president Moon Jae-in, in another unprecedented three-way meeting. Following a meeting on the south side of the demarcation line, Trump said he and Kim had agreed to restart negotiations on a nuclear agreement, four months after they collapsed at a summit meeting in Hanoi, Vietnam.
