3 years ago, I was in a dark hotel ballroom during #nyfw listening intently to a woman share stories about her early days in the #fashion industry: spending her last USD 300 to make a line, that was bought by @macys , and serendipitously featured in their newspaper ads, leading to her getting fired from her job at another brand, and giving her no other recourse but to follow her dreams of becoming a global brand.
That woman is @annasui , one of the only Asian American players in our industry. Her inspiring 30 year career is now the focus of an exhibit at @madmuseum .
I got to spend Saturday with Sui where she shared her insights into the direction of our industry:
1 | Missing the days of “Made in USA”: “The textiles were all made in the USA. All the denim was from the south. I remember all these great resources we used to have.”
2 | “See Now, Buy Now”: “You don’t have the sense of longing, of waiting 6 months to have it. But that has always been a part of Fashion. That longing makes it more desirable.”
