How to Properly Maintain a Refrigerator

Refrigerator repair is one thing in your kitchen that you hope you never, ever have to deal with.

Your refrigerator is your most essential appliance in your house, your apartment, or your college dorm room. Unless you’ve stocked up on crackers and Twinkies, you need your refrigerator to preserve your food. So should you repair or replace?

The typical refrigerator lifespan, depending on its initial quality, lasts approximately 8-14 years, so even if you are seven years down the road with your refrigerator, it is still worth it to call for professional appliance repair. A refrigerator is large, heavy and unwieldy, so you don’t want to just go about tossing each one that has a glitch in the ice machine. Not to mention that it takes time to pick out a new refrigerator, get it home and installed properly. In most situations, it is much faster, more affordable and more convenient to just fix it than it is to find a replacement.

Keep in mind this one simple tip:

With some simple maintenance and upkeep, you can avoid needing a professional refrigerator repair for as long as possible. The most important thing you can do is to regularly clean the mechanics, or coils, of your fridge.

Refrigerators come in three different configurations: If your unit has coils on the back, you should check them about twice a year to see if dirt and dust have collected. If so, the filth should be thoroughly cleaned and removed. If the coils are on top of the unit, check and clean them annually. If the coils are underneath the unit, they only need to be cleaned once every two or three years.

Dirty coils are the number one reason people have problems with their fridge, and they don’t even know it! If they are not cleaned regularly, the build up of dust and dirt will cause the compressor to overheat. This will cause the unit to shut down causing the food in your refrigerator to spoil which would be costly.

Keeping your refrigerator fresh and clean will allow you to avoid a professional refrigerator repair for as long as possible. Stay tuned for our next blog about cleaning your coils!

Washing Machines – Should You Repair or Replace?

Before making a decision on whether to repair or replace your broken down washing machine, it is important to ask yourself certain questions regarding your budget, personality and values. But first things first, you need to determine the exact problem that your appliance has, which will thereafter dictate how much it is going to cost you in washing machine service or repairs. And then of course there are the inconveniences that go with having any important home appliance repaired and unavailable for use whirlpool washer repair pasadena.

The good news of course is that if your washing machine is still under warranty, you will not have to pay out any money to have it repaired. However, if on the other hand your appliance is out of warranty, you will have to pay for it. To make it easier on you, try to find an appliance repair company that is willing to diagnose the problems you are facing with your washing machine via phone. If you have a technician come over to diagnose your problem, chances are that they will charge you a fee just for this. They may however deduct this cost from the total cost of completing the repair work. In the event that you opt for same-day, weekend or after-hours appointments, you should be prepared to pay extra for such services.

The general rule of thumb is that if your appliance costs you 50% or more of its original purchase price to repair it, then you should opt to replace it instead. However, if you have a lower threshold, you may get rid of your appliance if its projected repair costs are at least 40% of what you paid during its purchase. Some parts of your washing machine are relatively inexpensive and easy to have replaced such as belts and pulleys. You may also replace the seals of your washing machine easily, as well as install them yourself. You should however note that it is rather tricky to identify a faulty seal. However, it is easy for homeowners with a mind for DIY to repair or replace the washing machine pump.

Home Appliance Repairs

When most consumers buy a new home appliance, they usually don’t give too much thought to its expected life span. People are more preoccupied with the model’s functionality or how nice it looks in their kitchen. With 12 years being the average life expectancy of a home appliance, the prospect of having to call an appliance repair service in the foreseeable future seems remote–at least when that appliance is brand new. Everyone knows in the back of their minds that appliance repairs are an inevitable part of home ownership, but the prevailing belief is that the longer that expense can be postponed, the better. Assuming that it is a good-quality appliance brand and doesn’t have any manufacturing defects, a well maintained appliance should provide trouble-free use for several years.

Although some appliances can last for up to 15 years and longer Appliance Repair Van Nuys, there are numerous variables affecting when you’re going to need to call in an appliance repair company. Families that do washing on a daily basis, for example, will probably wear out the parts on their washer and dryer faster than those who do laundry once a week. While the typical life span of a washer and dryer are 10 and 13 years, respectively, a washer and dryer repair service will probably be paying at least two visits to your house during that time.

Well-made refrigerators often last 13 or more years, but their round-the-clock operation makes it highly likely that refrigerator repairs will be needed at some point. Even for something as simple as uneven or excessive cooling, calling a refrigerator repair service may be the only way to get the problem resolved. Putting it off is usually not an option because spoiled food can result in unnecessary waste, cost, or even illness. As is the case with most appliance repair needs, the problem–or the symptoms of an impending problem–are often obvious. Whether you’re noticing unusual noises, reduced performance, or a major malfunction, it’s probably time to dust off the phone number of your local appliance repair service to come take a look at your fridge.

If you’re wondering if you’re on “borrowed time” with any of your current household appliances, it depends on a number of factors, including frequency of use, how well the appliances have been maintained, and luck. According to the September 2005 issue of Appliance Magazine, gas ranges typically last for 15 years, which is the longest life expectancy of any home appliance. Standard refrigerators are expected to last around 13 years, and most dishwashers keep chugging away for 9 years. Electric ranges are typically good for 13 years and microwave ovens may call it quits after only 9 years. Mileage may vary, though.

Choosing Appliance Repairs

Appliance repairs are a great way to save money. If you handle repairs right away, you may not have to purchase expensive replacement appliances.

When appliances aren’t working as they should, it can make your life difficult. You’ll have to spend more time on your chores around the house, and you’ll have less time to spend with your loved ones. In addition, not getting repairs when they’re necessary will put you at a greater risk for needing to replace your appliance completely. That’s why timely repairs are the best way to save money as well as eliminate hassles around the house.

Don’t Ignore Ailing Appliances

Putting off repairs to your appliances is something that you should never do Jennair Appliance Repair. The odds are that you’ll spend less on appliance repairs now than you would if you had to purchase a replacement. If you don’t get your refrigerator or your dryer fixed at the first sign of a problem, you could be looking at a hefty replacement cost. Appliance problems tend to get worse over time if you don’t deal with them, so getting appliance repairs now is the best bet for saving your appliance and not having to purchase a new one.

Be Cautious of DIY Solutions

If one of your home appliances is giving you trouble, your first instinct may be to try and repair it on your own. In some cases, this is a great idea, and you can end up saving a lot of money doing the repairs yourself. However, it is something that you should approach with caution. If your fridge is giving you trouble and you have some experience with refrigerator repair, then a do-it-yourself approach may be best. If, however, you aren’t familiar with the inner workings of a fridge, then your refrigeration repair may be best left to a professional. Attempting to fix an appliance on your own could make things worse, and you could end up having to buy a new unit. Just don’t pursue DIY repairs unless you know that they are safe and that you won’t cost yourself any more money by tackling them on your own.

Consulting a Repair Professional

There are some appliance repair jobs that you may not want to attempt on your own. If, for example, you’re having a problem with your dryer, then it may be best to call on dryer repair professionals to handle the problem. Dryers have lots of electrical components and it could be a big risk for you to try and repair one without the help of an expert. Instead of putting yourself at risk, contact a dryer repair expert right away to help you deal with the problem. The sooner that you get your broken appliances worked on, the sooner you can get back to your normal routine.

How Washing Machine Programs Work

Washing machine programs usually have nothing to do with computers unless you’re talking about modern and high tech machines. All the “programming” that goes into standard style washing machines is of a mechanical/electrical nature. Let’s take a look at what’s going on when you turn the dial (also called a cycle switch) on an ordinary older style mechanical washing machine:

Cycle Switch

You’ll notice that the dial on a machine cycle switch dial takes a bit of force to turn Washer Repair Los Angeles. This is because it is turning a set of gears attached to a small motor. These gears have a large degree of gear reduction and thus the dial turns slowly.

Up toward the top of the switch, in the back part of the dial that the user turns, there are a series of bumps that, as the machine turns, raise and lower metal pieces to make electrical contacts. The size of these bumps and the spaces between them determines how long various cycles last and how long the pauses between them are.

Speed Control and Temperature Control

In terms of speed and temperature control, most washing machines use a simple switch system that when switched to different positions manually open or close sets of contacts. When switched one way, only hot water supply solenoid is engaged and only hot water flows into the washing machine. When the switch is put on a different setting only the cold water supply solenoid is engaged. And when the switch is put in a third position, both the hot and cold water solenoids engage and both hot and cold water enter the washing machine, creating warm water.

Water Level Sensor/Control

This device works on the basis of pressure. There is a pipe with both a large and small end. The large end connects to base of the tank/tub and the small end attaches to the sensor mechanism. As the water level rises in the washing machine tank, it also rises in the hose and traps air in the hose, thus increasing pressure. When this pressure gets high enough it pushes a piston up that closes an electrical contact that shuts off the water supply. The adjustment to this is a cam mechanism that pushes a spring against the cylinder, making it harder to push the piston up. Thus a higher water pressure is required to push the piston up and close the electrical contact.

With the advent of the digital age these types of devices have gotten more sophisticated and digitally based and will most likely continue to do so. But the basic functioning of most household devices such as cheap tumble dryers, a fridge freezer, a dishwasher, and laundry machines still relies heavily on simple mechanical/electrical technology, and many older machines are still in use. It pays to understand the basics of these machines for use in repair and maintenance. Electronic gadgetry may be used in the control system of various household appliances, but the final work is still done by mechanical electrical technology that has been around for quite a while now.

Appliance Repair Nightmare!

Appliance Repair Safety. While on a call recently, I ran into a situation that is every appliance repairman’s worst dream. I had responded to a call on a washing machine that wouldn’t spin made by a very frustrated homemaker with three children whose laundry was piling up.

After taking the front screws off and removing the front cover I quickly realized the last person to service this washing machine was either a rank amateur or a tinkerer with inclinations towards improvised engineering Whirlpool Appliance Repair Los Angeles.

The reason this particular washing machine was refusing to go into spin cycle was that the wire leading to the lid switch had shorted out, burnt itself in two, although luckily it had not affected any other parts of the washer.

The bigger problem however was that someone in the past had completely bypassed the lid switch, while those of you not in the appliance repair trade may not realize the implications of such a hazardous move, any professional appliance repairman worth their salt will tell you this is a huge NO, NO!

To explain, the purpose of a lid switch, which is usually but not always tied into a lid locking device, is to keep the lid of the washer securely closed while the machine is going into high speed spins, which can reach hundreds of RPM’s (Revolutions Per Minute). This is the period of time that your washer presents the greatest hazard to your family or anyone using the machine.

Not a year goes by that some unfortunate individual foolishly decides to reach their arm into a machine that is in a high speed spin in a misguided effort to slow it down or stop it. The results are most always tragic.

The clothes in the washer usually trap the person’s arm and then literally twist it off. A best case scenario is the arm is shattered in several places, in some of the worst ones, the arm has been wrenched free of the body, an event almost too horrible to imagine.

To tie this in, the purpose of your lid switch is to make absolutely sure this does not happen to whomever is using the washer or to anyone passing by. Under no circumstances should a lid switch be bypassed, nor should you make any other repairs to a unit that has had the switch bypassed.

In the handful of instances I have run into this issue, the homeowner was upset to know their appliance’s main safety feature had been bypassed, and more than happy to pay the small extra cost to have the lid safety system working properly.

How can you check to make sure your washer is functioning correctly? Put a load in your washer and start it and let it fill with water. Most washers will allow you to open the lid in the agitation cycle so you can add detergents and softeners.

Why Does My Clothes Dryer Vent Tube Keep Clogging?

On more than one occasion, in the course of performing a home inspection, I’ll ask the homeowner if they’re having trouble with their clothes dryer and if it seems to take very long to dry their clothes. Most of the time they look astonished and ask me how I could possibly know that. I’m told that the dryer started out fine then just seemed to take longer and longer to completely dry the clothes, and they’re on the brink of calling a technician or buying a new appliance. Then I take them outside and show them the dangerous condition that exists and the cause of the problem… a dryer vent tube that is completely clogged with lint at the exhaust hood Dryer Repair Los Angeles.

Not only does this condition prevent the appliance from drying properly, it’s a severe fire hazard. Then I show them the reason for the clog – a screen installed on the end of the exhaust hood. “This screen is not supposed to be there”, I tell them, “and not only is it a fire hazard, but it’s against building code”. To make matters worse, they tell me they previously brought up the issue with their builder, and was told that the screen is needed to keep “critters” from entering. What a completely incorrect statement. A properly installed vent will have a flap (damper) on the end that opens when the dryer is operating and closes when it’s off. This prevents any critter entry.

Having a screen, of any type, on the end of the vent tube is good for only one thing… stopping lint from venting and causing a clog in the entire tube, period”. Anyone who states otherwise is ignorant to the potential hazard as well as the building code. The IRC (International Residential Code) is very specific regarding the installation of clothes dryer vents and states “dryer exhaust ducts for clothes dryers shall terminate on the outside of the building and shall be equipped with a backdraft damper. Screens shall not be installed at the duct termination. Ducts shall not be connected or installed with sheet metal screws or other fasteners that will obstruct the flow. Clothes dryer exhaust ducts shall not be connected to a gas vent connector, gas vent or chimney. Clothes dryer exhaust ducts shall not extend into or through ducts or plenums.”

There are others that are just as ignorant to the code requirements. On a recent stucco inspection, I happened to notice a severely clogged vent hood. I asked the homeowner my standard question about their dryer and was told that the tube clogged regularly. They had it cleaned out twice before, and were getting ready to have it done a third time. The company they used never mentioned the screen on the end of the tube. I’d like to think it was just an oversight and not conveniently overlooked for job security.

I also noticed my neighbors’ newly installed roof with a brand spanking new vent hood installed. Needless to say it was the wrong type and should never have been used for a clothes dryer vent. And guess what, it was already starting to clog and the roofing company would not repair it.

The Consumer Products Safety Commission estimates there are 24,000 clothes dryer fires each year in the United States, amounting to $96,000,000 in estimated property damage. Lack of maintenance and improper installations are the leading causes, and LINT is the leading material to ignite. These fires can also be caused by failure of mechanical and/or electrical parts within the dryer itself, improper materials being put into the dryer, and insufficient airflow as a result of improper installation.

A regular inspection of your dryer components and installation material should be performed as part of regular homeowner maintenance. Be sure to check your dryer vent and vent hose regularly for lint accumulation, and make certain there is no screen on the end of the tube. If the tube terminates on your roof, be certain to have a professional inspect the end for a screen if you’re not comfortable going on the roof.

Upgrading Your Old Appliances

If your appliances in your home have been there for quite a while you may want to consider upgrading your appliances for several different reasons. Updating your appliances can be a hard choice with the variety that is available now. If you are in the market to upgrade your old appliances there are a few things you should know.

The appliances in your home include your stove Maytag Appliance Repair Los Angeles, dishwasher, refrigerator, washer, dryer, hot water heater and your furnace. You may have all of these appliances or some. If the appliances you have are over ten years you may need to upgrade. The appliances made a long time ago are not energy efficient and may cost more to run. When you compare your yearly power bill from one year to the next you may see an increase as you use the appliances. The newer appliances can save on your power bills because they do not require much energy to run them.

Dishwashers are probably the least appliance used. No one uses the dishwasher in fear that they will use too much water and energy to run and therefore choose to wash dishes by hand. The good news is that with an energy efficient dishwasher, the amount of water and energy that it takes to run the dishwasher is minimal. In fact you may use more water washing your dishes by hand then what you would use in a dishwasher during a single cycle.

Refrigerators are becoming an appliance of convenience due to the fact that it is no longer necessary to open the door in order to get ice and cold water. Now it can be accessed from outside the refrigerator on the door. This not only provides you with a constant supply of ice and cold water for drinking but it also saves energy because you do not open the refrigerator door to access them. This can save you a lot of money on your power bill each year since this is the reason why the refrigerator is opened so often.

Washers and Dryers are now being made to be energy efficient as they save on the amount of water they use as well as the many different cycles and selections to make that will wash your clothes and dry them on the first try. If clothes do not get clean on the first cycle we usually put them back to wash again. This can cause you to use more energy, more water and heat. Dryers can not dry efficiently on the first cycle if the load is large or the wrong settings are used. This may cause you to use your dryer more than once in order to dry your load of clothes.

Modern appliances are not only easier to use with all their different settings but they are more efficient as well. Choosing to upgrade your appliances may be a big expense initially but after a while the savings will more than pay for the appliance. Most appliance stores can offer you all the latest in home appliances.
